Car interiors are small, tight and full of fabric that should not stay wet. That changes which specs to look at, and it explains why a box extractor sized for a living room is often the wrong tool.

Weight and size

You carry the machine to the car, lift it over a sill or into a van and move it around a shop floor. Listed machine weights run from 28 lb for the Tempo spotter to 88 lb for the EDIC Galaxy 3000. Mosquito gives only a 107 lb shipping weight. If you work at customers' homes, the 45 lb Mytee Lite is the figure to beat among the full extractors here.

Heat

All seven are heated models, and the listed heater sizes range from 600 watts on the spotter to 1,200 watts on the Stingray, Sandia Indy, Powr-Flite and Mosquito. Mytee's manuals give a 210°F maximum for the Mytee Lite and the Stingray, and Sandia's spec sheet says the Indy extracts with 200°F solution. Read heater numbers as the maker lists them: an in-line heater and an external heater are different builds.

Pump pressure

The PSI figure is the pump's rating, not the pressure at the tool's spray tip. The full extractors here list 100 to 120 PSI and the Tempo spotter 55 PSI. More pressure does not mean a cleaner seat: Mytee's manual for the Mytee Lite recommends one wet pass followed by two dry passes so you do not over-soak the material.

Water lift and airflow

Water lift, in inches, is how hard the vacuum can pull water up. The makers list 85 inches for the Tempo, 117 inches for the Sandia and the EDIC, 130 inches for both Mytee detailers, 135 inches for the Powr-Flite and 137 inches for the Mosquito. Lift is a rating from the maker, so treat the gaps between 130 and 137 as small. Airflow is listed at 100 CFM for both Mytee detailers, 99 CFM for the Sandia and 97 CFM for the Tempo and the Powr-Flite. Both are maker ratings, so a long hose and a narrow tool leave less at the fabric.

Tank size

A bigger tank means fewer trips to empty and refill, and it also means more weight when full. A 4 gallon machine gets filled and dumped often on a long job but stays light. A 12 gallon machine runs longer between stops and needs a wheeled approach to the car.

Power draw

The Mytee Lite lists 19 A at 115 V, the Stingray 20 A and the Tempo spotter 13 A. All three Mytee manuals tell you to use a grounded 20 amp outlet and skip extension cords, so locate a 20 amp outlet within 25 ft of the vehicle before a job at a customer's home. EDIC's manual says the Galaxy 3000 runs on a standard 15 amp, 120 volt circuit and allows a 12 gauge, three-wire extension cord no longer than 25 ft.

The 8070 is the extractor we would put in most detailers' hands first. The spec rows give a 120 PSI diaphragm pump at 1.3 GPM, one 3-stage vacuum (100 CFM, 130 inches of lift) and a 1,000 watt heater. The tanks are 4 gallons each and the whole machine weighs 45 lb and rolls on 6 inch rear wheels with 2 inch locking front casters. Mytee lists its uses as auto, boat and plane detailing, upholstery, spot cleaning and small carpeted rooms.

The HP90 Stingray matches the Mytee Lite's 120 PSI, 1.3 GPM pump rating and 130 inch lift, then steps up to a 1,200 watt heater (the Mytee Lite's is 1,000 watts), 5 gallon tanks and a stainless steel float switch in the recovery tank that shuts the vacuum off when it fills. It sits on four 3 inch locking casters with molded-in lift handles and weighs 65 lb. It draws 20 A at 115 V from one 25 ft cord.

The trade is weight. At 65 lb it is 20 lb heavier than the Mytee Lite, and a full 5 gallon tank adds more. It is one of the better-selling detailing extractors in our range.

Best for a mid-size shop: Sandia Sniper 6 gal Indy 86-4000-H

The Sandia Sniper Indy has 6 gallon solution and recovery tanks, a 100 PSI pump, a 15 ft solution hose and a 25 ft power cord. Sandia lists a 3-stage vacuum, a 17 inch width, 99 CFM of airflow and a polyethylene body made in America. It weighs 82 lb. Sandia's spec sheet lists a 1,200 watt in-line heater, which it says lets you extract with 200°F solution, a 117 inch lift and 10 inch non-marking wheels.

Sandia's warranty covers the body for life, the motor and pump for 2 years, the electrical parts for 1 year and tools and accessories for 90 days. For a shop that wants long body coverage on a mid-size machine, that is worth weighing against the price.

Skip it if lift matters most to you. Sandia's 117 inches is below the 130 inches the Mytee Lite and Stingray list from lighter machines.

Best for high volume with the longest warranty: EDIC Galaxy 3000 3139BX-EH

The Galaxy 3000 is a 12 gallon solution, 11 gallon recovery machine. EDIC gives 120 PSI of solution pressure, a 117 inch lift, a 1,000 watt external heater, a 15 ft low-moisture high-heat hose and a 50 ft detachable power cord. It weighs 88 lb, rolls on 10 inch non-marking rear wheels and comes with a stainless steel detailer tool. EDIC's product page lists 5 years parts and labor with lifetime coverage on the housing, the longest parts and labor term in this list; confirm the term on your registration card, since the manual's warranty page lists its automotive Galaxy machines at 2 years.

It makes sense in a fixed shop where the machine sits near the bay and tanks are filled once. EDIC's manual says to use defoamer at all times and to run clean water through the solution lines after each day's use.

Skip it if you work mobile. It weighs 88 lb empty, and a full solution tank adds about 100 lb of water (our calculation: 12 gal x 8.34 lb per gallon), so plan on a ramp or two people and fill it at the job.

Best for strongest lift: Mosquito 12 gal automotive extractor

The Mosquito lists 137 inches of water lift, the highest figure in this list, from a 5.7 inch single 3-stage Ametek vacuum motor. The pump is rated at 120 PSI, the heater is 1,200 watts and the recovery capacity is 12 gallons. It runs on one 25 ft 12/3 gauge cord and ships at 107 lb. Coverage is lifetime on the body but only 1 year on motor and pump.

Its 107 lb shipping weight puts it near the EDIC's 110 lb at the heavy end of this list, so it suits a shop that keeps one extractor at the bay.

Skip it if you need a comparable warranty on the motor. One year on the motor and pump is shorter than the EDIC's 5 years.

Best with a 20 ft hose: Powr-Flite PFX1080CW

The Powr-Flite PFX1080CW lists a 100 PSI solution pressure, 135 inches of water lift, a 10 gallon solution tank and an 8 gallon recovery tank. The kit includes a 20 ft hose, a 25 ft cord and an AA162 detail tool. The machine weighs 84 lb. Powr-Flite lists a 1,200 watt heater, and its spec sheet gives 1 year on the motor, pump and workmanship and 5 years on the housing and tank.

The 20 ft hose is the longest listed in this list and lets you park the machine outside a big SUV or van and still reach the rear cargo area.

Skip it if you lift the machine into a van often. At 84 lb it is almost twice the Mytee Lite's 45 lb.

Is a spotter enough for car detailing?

A heated spotter is enough when most of your work is seats, door panels, floor mats and stains. It is also an entry-level way into heated extraction at $967, and it is easy to keep in a van. Spot extractors in our range run from under $700 to about $1,300.

You outgrow a spotter when you start doing full floor carpet in trucks and SUVs, or when you find yourself emptying the 1 gallon recovery tank every few minutes.
