A floor sweeper saves hours of manual broom work and captures fine dust that brooms scatter into the air. Pick the format first by area size, then compare brush width, hopper capacity and power source.
Manual, Walk Behind or Ride On
- Manual push sweepers. No power needed. Light to manoeuvre. Ideal for areas under 20,000 square feet, retail aisles and small workshops.
- Battery powered walk behind sweepers. Add motorised brushes and a vacuum to capture fines. Cover 20,000 to 100,000 square feet per shift.
- Ride on sweepers. Operator sits on the machine. The right pick for warehouses, manufacturing plants and large parking lots above 100,000 square feet.
Brush Width and Hopper Size
Wider brushes finish the job faster but need more space to turn. A 26 inch sweeper handles tight aisles and storerooms. A 32 to 38 inch sweeper covers most warehouse and dock work. Above 45 inches you are in ride on territory. Match hopper capacity so it does not need emptying mid run; a 5 to 8 gallon hopper works for most janitorial sweeps, while a 20+ gallon hopper suits production environments.
Indoor or Outdoor
Indoor sweepers focus on capturing fine dust with a sealed hopper and HEPA filtration. Outdoor parking lot sweepers are heavier duty with side brushes that pull debris out of curbs and corners.
Pair a sweeper with a floor scrubber for a two step sweep then scrub workflow, and a commercial vacuum for stairs and corners the sweeper cannot reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a sweeper and a scrubber?
A sweeper picks up dry debris, dust and small loose material with brushes and a hopper. A scrubber dispenses water and cleaning solution and lifts wet soil from the floor with a squeegee. Most facilities use both: sweep first to remove debris, then scrub for the deep clean.
Can I use an indoor sweeper outside?
It depends on the model. Sealed indoor sweepers can struggle with wet leaves, gravel and large debris. Look for a sweeper rated for both indoor and outdoor use if you need one machine for both.
How long do floor sweeper batteries last?
Modern lithium batteries last 4 to 6 hours per charge and 5 to 8 years before replacement. Sealed lead acid batteries last 2 to 4 hours per charge and 2 to 4 years before replacement.
What size sweeper do I need?
For under 20,000 square feet a manual or compact walk behind is enough. For 20,000 to 100,000 square feet a battery walk behind sweeper covers a full shift. Above that, move to a ride on sweeper to keep operator productivity high.
