Auto Detailing Equipment List for Mobile and Shop Detailers

Starting an auto detailing business is appealing because the equipment cost is low compared to most service trades. A mobile detailer with the right kit can charge 100 to 250 dollars per detail and book 4 to 6 details a day. A fixed shop scales higher. But the wrong equipment slows the work, damages cars and tanks margins. Here is the equipment list that keeps a detail business profitable.

Cleaning Tools

  • Auto detailing extractor (heated). The single most important tool. Pulls embedded soil and stains from carpet and upholstery without overwetting. Browse auto detailing extractors.
  • Wet/dry vacuum. 4 to 8 gallon shop style for floor mats, trunk and crevices.
  • Detail brushes. Soft horse hair, stiff nylon, dedicated wheel brushes. 8 to 12 piece set.
  • Microfibre towels. 30+ in rotation. Different colours for paint, glass, wheels.

Polishers and Buffers

  • Dual action polisher. 5 or 6 inch random orbital. The safe DA finish polisher for paint correction.
  • Rotary polisher. 7 inch, for heavy correction on hard clear coats.
  • Cordless DA polisher. For mobile work where outlet access is limited.
  • Polishing pads. Compounding (cutting) and polishing (finishing) in 5 and 6 inch.

Pressure Washing

  • Cold water pressure washer. 1700 to 3000 PSI commercial grade.
  • Foam cannon. Snow foam for pre wash and rinse less wash.
  • Water tank (mobile). 50 to 100 gallon for off grid wash setups.

Steam Cleaning

For odour, mould and stain removal on upholstery, a commercial steam cleaner sanitises and lifts soil with heat alone. Optional but transformative for high end detail packages.

Chemistry

  • Auto carpet and upholstery cleaner
  • Tire shine and dressing
  • Wheel cleaner (acid free for clear coated wheels)
  • Glass cleaner
  • Leather cleaner and conditioner
  • Paint compound and polish
  • Wax or sealant
  • Quick detail spray
  • Decontamination clay or iron remover

Lighting

A detail bay needs swinging arm LED lights to expose swirl marks and defects. Mobile detailers use a portable LED panel for indoor garages and overcast conditions.

Accessories

  • Air compressor and blower for water removal in panel gaps
  • Pneumatic and electric polisher hoses (3 prong grounded)
  • Foot stool or rolling stool for low body work
  • Wheel chocks and a tarp for under car drips
  • Customer waiting amenities (water, branded business cards)

Cost Estimate

A complete entry level mobile detail kit costs 4,000 to 7,000 dollars. A fixed shop with multiple bays runs 15,000 to 30,000 dollars. The biggest line items are the extractor, polishers, pressure washer and water tank. Chemistry adds 500 to 1000 dollars in opening inventory.

Licensing and Insurance

Most municipalities require a business license. General liability insurance starts around 600 dollars per year. If you carry product, also carry product liability insurance. Mobile detailers typically need commercial vehicle insurance on the work van.

Buy quality where it matters (extractor, polishers, pressure washer) and you will have equipment that lasts a decade. Cheap chemistry, microfibres and brushes can be replaced as needed without breaking the bank.
