Bathtub Faucet Types Explained

Choosing a bathtub faucet is not just about looks. The type of faucet has to match the type of tub and how it is plumbed, or it simply will not work. Here are the main bathtub faucet types and where each one fits.

Deck Mount Faucets

Deck mount faucets install on a flat surface, either the rim of the tub itself or a tile deck surrounding it. They suit drop-in and undermount tubs that have a deck for the faucet. Make sure the tub or deck has the right pre-drilled holes or space for the faucet you choose.

Wall Mount Faucets

Wall mount faucets come out of the wall above the tub, the classic setup for alcove tubs and tub shower combinations. The plumbing runs through the wall, so this is planned during rough-in. Wall mounts keep the tub deck clear and are common in standard bathrooms.

Freestanding Tub Fillers

A freestanding tub does not have a deck or an adjacent wall, so it needs a floor mounted freestanding tub filler. These tall, dramatic faucets rise from the floor and arch over the tub. They make a statement, but they require floor plumbing planned before the tub is set, so decide early.

Roman Tub Faucets

Roman tub faucets are a type of deck mount with a high arc spout and separate handles, designed for the wide deck of a larger tub. They deliver a high flow to fill a big tub and have a luxurious look.

Match the Faucet to the Tub

1. Freestanding tub: floor mounted tub filler or sometimes wall mount
2. Alcove or tub shower: wall mount
3. Drop-in or undermount with a deck: deck mount or Roman
4. Always confirm the spout reaches over the tub and the flow rate fills it well
