How to Clean a Vacuum Filter and Keep Suction Strong

If your vacuum has lost suction, the filter is the first thing to check. A clogged filter chokes airflow, which weakens cleaning and makes the motor work harder. Cleaning filters on schedule is the easiest way to keep a vacuum performing and to extend its life.

Know Your Filter Type

Vacuums use different filters, and the cleaning method depends on the type:

• Foam filters: usually washable
• Pleated cartridge filters: tap out dust, some are rinsable
• HEPA filters: some are washable, many are replace only
• Cloth or felt filters: brush or rinse depending on the model

Always check the manual, since washing a filter that is not washable ruins it.

How to Clean Washable Filters

1. Unplug the vacuum and remove the filter over a trash can
2. Tap the filter to knock off loose dust
3. Rinse washable filters under cool water until the water runs clear, with no soap unless the maker allows it
4. Let the filter dry completely, which can take 24 hours, before reinstalling

Installing a damp filter can damage the motor and grow mold, so let it dry fully.

HEPA Filters Are Different

• Clean washable filters every few uses, more often in dusty environments
