How to Clean and Maintain Polished Concrete Floors

Polished concrete is popular in retail, showrooms and warehouses because it looks sharp and resists wear. The polish is a mechanical finish, not a coating, so it does not need stripping and waxing. It does need the right cleaning routine to hold its shine.

Daily Dust Mopping Is Non-Negotiable

Fine grit is the enemy of a polished floor. Walked across the surface, it acts like sandpaper and dulls the gloss over time. Dust mop high traffic areas at least once a day with a treated or microfiber mop. In open areas a commercial vacuum with a clean filter pulls grit out of the surface texture faster than a dust mop alone.

Use a Neutral Cleaner Only

Polished concrete reacts badly to acidic or highly alkaline cleaners, which can etch or cloud the surface. Use a pH neutral cleaner made for polished concrete. An auto scrubber with a white or red pad applies the cleaner, scrubs lightly and recovers the water so nothing dries back as a film. Avoid letting cleaning solution sit and dry on the surface.

Restore Gloss With Burnishing

Over time foot traffic flattens the micro-shine. A high speed floor burnisher brings it back. Run a burnisher fitted with a polishing pad on a schedule that matches your traffic:

• Light traffic offices: burnish monthly
• Moderate retail traffic: burnish weekly
• Heavy traffic entrances: burnish 2 to 3 times a week

Burnishing also works a concrete densifier or guard product deeper into the surface, which helps the floor resist staining.

Handle Spills Quickly

Liquids like coffee, soda and oil can stain polished concrete if they sit, especially on lighter floors. Wipe spills promptly and clean the area with neutral cleaner. For oil in a shop area, use a degreaser rated as pH neutral so you do not damage the polish.

What to Avoid

• Acidic cleaners, vinegar and citrus products that etch the surface
• Wax or floor finish, which defeats the point of a polished floor and adds maintenance
• Abrasive pads that scratch the gloss
• Letting dirty mop water dry on the floor
