How to Clean Upholstery: Sofas, Chairs and Car Seats

Upholstery picks up oils, dust, food residue and pet dander faster than any other soft surface in the home. Most fabric sofas need a deep clean every 6 to 12 months, more often with kids or pets. The right tools and a steady technique restore fabric to nearly new without leaving water rings or wet spots that take days to dry.

Read the tag first

Every upholstered piece has a cleaning code on a hidden tag (usually under a cushion or on the deck):

• W — water based cleaners only
• S — solvent only, no water
• WS — either water or solvent
• X — vacuum only, no liquid cleaning

Using water on an S coded fabric leaves permanent water rings. Always check before applying anything.

Tools you need

• Upholstery attachment for your vacuum (rectangular brush head)
• Spot extractor with hand tool — see our extraction equipment

• White microfiber cloths
• Upholstery cleaner appropriate to the code
• Spray bottle for measured application

Standard cleaning sequence (W or WS code)

1. Vacuum thoroughly with the upholstery attachment, including under cushions and into seams
2. Pre-treat any obvious stains with a targeted spot remover, blot in
3. Spray the upholstery cleaner across one section at a time (do not over-wet)
4. Agitate with the soft brush in small circles
5. Extract with the spot extractor — slow forward stroke spraying, slow back stroke vacuuming, then a dry pass for water recovery
6. Move to the next section and repeat
7. Allow 4 to 8 hours drying time with airflow

Leather upholstery

Leather is its own category. Vacuum first, wipe with a damp microfiber, apply a leather cleaner with a clean cloth, then condition once dry. Avoid all purpose cleaners — they strip the protective coating and dry the leather out. Reapply leather conditioner every 6 to 12 months.

Microfiber and synthetic fabrics

Microfiber cleans well with isopropyl alcohol — spray a section, brush with a soft bristle, and the dirt lifts as the alcohol evaporates. No water rings, fast drying. For tougher stains, a microfiber cleaner with mild detergent works.

Car upholstery

Same approach as home upholstery, but air movement matters more — close the car windows and run the AC on full after extraction to drive moisture out. Driver seat and floor mats benefit from twice yearly cleaning. Headliners need extra care because they are glued to a thin foam layer that can sag if over-wetted.

Solvent only fabrics (S code)

Use a dry solvent cleaner — these come as foam, powder or liquid. Apply per the label, agitate, then vacuum out. No water at any stage. Common on velvet, silk blends and antique upholstery.

Pet stain protocol

Treat pet accidents as soon as possible. Blot, then apply an enzyme cleaner. Let it dwell per label, then extract. The enzymes break down proteins that ordinary cleaners only mask. Without enzyme treatment, the smell and stain return as the fabric dries.

Common mistakes

Over-wetting. Soaking upholstery causes mildew in the foam layer that no amount of surface cleaning fixes.

Wrong cleaner for the code. Always check the tag.

Scrubbing too hard. Causes pilling and breaks fibers.

Skipping the vacuum. Solid soil grinds into fabric during wet cleaning if not removed first.
