How to Pick a Bathroom Vanity

The right bathroom vanity comes down to four decisions: width, sink configuration, style and storage layout. Get the width right first because it sets the limits on everything else.

Width and Sink Configuration

  • 24 inch vanities. Powder rooms and small primary baths. Single sink only.
  • 30 to 36 inch vanities. The standard single sink width for guest baths.
  • 48 inch vanities. Single sink with extra counter, or compact double sink.
  • 60 inch vanities. Most popular double sink width for primary bathrooms.
  • 72 inch vanities. Double sink with generous storage on either side.

Browse by width: 24 inch vanities, 36 inch vanities, 48 inch vanities or 60 inch vanities.

Style

  • Modern. Slab door fronts, integrated counters and matte black or brushed nickel hardware.
  • Transitional. Shaker or beaded fronts with stone tops. Works with most decor.
  • Farmhouse. Apron front sinks, distressed wood and bronze hardware.
  • Traditional. Carved details, raised panels and warm wood tones.

Counter Material and Faucet Holes

Most vanities ship with the counter pre cut for one or three hole faucet sets. Quartz, marble, ceramic and porcelain are the common counter materials. Quartz is the toughest and stain resistant. Marble looks rich but needs sealing. Ceramic and porcelain integrated counters cost less and clean easily, but chip more easily near the sink rim.

Add the rest of the bath suite from related collections: bathtubs, showers, toilets or bathroom mirrors.

Brand Choice

LAVIVA bathroom vanities are a leader in transitional and modern designs with stone tops included. Better Vanity covers a wide price range from compact powder rooms to large double sinks. Silkroad Exclusive focuses on traditional carved styles in walnut and cherry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard depth of a bathroom vanity?

Standard bathroom vanities are 21 inches deep, with the counter overhanging by 1 inch for a 22 inch counter. Powder room and small bathroom vanities can be 18 inches deep to save floor space.

Is a freestanding or wall mounted vanity better?

Freestanding vanities offer more storage and hide plumbing inside the cabinet. Wall mounted vanities free up floor space and look modern, but show plumbing under the unit and provide less drawer storage. Wall mounted is harder to add to an older bathroom because it needs blocking inside the wall.

Do bathroom vanities come with a faucet?

Most do not. The vanity ships with the counter pre cut for a faucet, but the faucet itself is sold separately so you can match the rest of the bath hardware.

What size mirror works with a vanity?

Match the mirror width to the cabinet width or sink width. For a 36 inch single sink vanity, a 24 to 32 inch mirror centred over the sink looks balanced. For a 60 inch double sink vanity, two 24 to 30 inch mirrors centred over each sink work better than one wide mirror.
