Frequently Asked Questions
Why are FLIR cameras more expensive than other brands?
FLIR makes its own thermal sensors (most other brands buy them). The complete vertical integration plus mature firmware, software and global service network drives the price. For paid inspection and industrial work, the support and image quality justify the cost.
What resolution FLIR camera do I need?
For residential home inspection, 160 by 120 (E5 Pro level) is the practical entry point. For building science and energy auditing, 320 by 240 (E54+) is the sweet spot. For electrical thermography, 320 by 240 with high temperature range. For fire service or R&D, go higher.
Are FLIR cameras NIST traceable?
Yes. All current generation FLIR cameras are NIST traceable and can be sent for annual calibration through FLIR's authorised service centres. A calibration certificate documents the camera's accuracy at multiple temperature points.
What is MSX on a FLIR camera?
MSX (Multi Spectral Dynamic Imaging) overlays the visible camera image's edge detail on the thermal image. Labels, gauges, serial plates and writing remain readable in the final thermal image, which makes reports easier to interpret.
