Construction Cleanup Equipment: What You Need on Every Site

Construction cleanup is its own specialty. The mix of fine dust, sharp debris, residual chemicals and finished surfaces that need protection makes it different from any other cleaning job. The right equipment moves the work from a multi-day grind to a steady, predictable process.

Stages of a construction cleanup

Most jobs run in three phases:

  1. Rough clean — bulk debris, large dust drifts, exterior windows. Done after framing inspection
  2. Final clean — fine dust on every surface, fixtures, glass, floors. Done after trades finish
  3. Punch clean — touch up after walk through. Smaller scope, attention to detail

Different stages need different gear, but the core list overlaps.

Vacuums and dust collection

HEPA filtered vacuums are non-negotiable on any site touching silica, lead or asbestos. OSHA Table 1 lists allowable methods for silica producing work, and most paths require a HEPA vacuum on the tool. Browse our vacuum collection for HEPA rated options.

For loose drywall and large debris, a 16 to 30 gallon wet/dry industrial vacuum handles bulk pickup. Auto filter shakers extend filter life by knocking dust loose between fills.

Air filtration

Negative air machines and HEPA air scrubbers run during cleanup to remove airborne particulate. Sized at 4 to 6 air changes per hour for the work zone, they keep dust from settling back onto cleaned surfaces. Critical for any indoor cleanup with active dust generation.

Floor sweepers

Walk behind sweepers cover 10,000 square feet per hour with a single operator, picking up nail debris, sawdust and packing material that mops cannot handle. Larger sites benefit from ride on units. The scrub follows after the sweep.

Autoscrubbers

Once major debris is removed, an autoscrubber lays down water, scrubs the floor, and recovers the dirty water in one pass. Size the machine to the floor — a 17 inch deck for tight spaces, 26 inch and up for open floors. Walk behind for under 30,000 square feet, ride on for larger.

Pressure washers

Exterior cleanup, concrete pads, equipment yards and any place with embedded grime. Cold water units handle most surfaces. Hot water (180 degrees Fahrenheit) is needed for grease and oil. Browse our pressure washer range for site appropriate options.

Window cleaning

Construction window film, paint overspray and silicone residue need specific tools — razor scrapers (with a "no scratch" approach for tempered glass), squeegees, water fed poles for high glass. A two stage process with a scraping pass and a rinse pass leaves the cleanest finish.

Personal protective equipment

  • N95 respirators minimum — half face P100 for silica or asbestos work
  • Safety glasses on every part of the cleanup
  • Cut resistant gloves for handling debris
  • Steel toe boots rated for the site
  • Tyvek suits for fine dust environments
  • Hearing protection when running multiple machines

Mops, buckets and small tools

Microfiber flat mops outperform string mops on construction floors — they pick up rather than spread fine residue. Use a two bucket system (one clean, one dirty) and change the wash water every 1000 square feet. Scrapers, putty knives and detail brushes handle paint drips and adhesive residue.

Standard kit for a 5 person crew

  1. 2 HEPA vacuums (16 gallon)
  2. 1 walk behind sweeper
  3. 1 walk behind autoscrubber (20 inch)
  4. 1 negative air machine (1500 CFM)
  5. 1 cold water pressure washer (3000 PSI)
  6. 5 sets of microfiber flat mops, buckets, hand tools
  7. Full PPE for each operator plus 20 percent spares

This kit covers roughly 50,000 square feet of interior cleanup per crew per day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest cleanup mistake?

Cleaning in the wrong order. Always clean top down — ceilings, light fixtures, walls, then floors. Cleaning floors first means doing them again when the upper surfaces dust off.

Is a shop vac good enough for construction?

For small jobs yes. For full construction cleanups a household shop vac will burn out quickly and lacks the filtration to handle silica safely.

What certifications matter most for the operator?

OSHA 10 hour minimum, OSHA 30 hour for supervisors. Silica awareness training is required for any cutting or grinding work. Browse our construction cleanup equipment for full kits.
