How to Maintain a Carpet Extractor So It Lasts

After Every Job

1. Empty and rinse the recovery tank, then leave the lid off so it can air out
2. Flush the solution system with clean water, or a pump conditioner, to clear cleaning chemical out of the pump and lines
3. Rinse the vacuum hose and wand so soil does not dry inside
4. Remove and rinse any filters or screens

Flushing the solution lines is the single most important step. Cleaning chemicals left in the pump can crystallize and cause clogs or pump failure.

Protect the Pump and Heater

The pump is the heart of a carpet extractor. Always run clean water through it after using cleaning solution, and never run the pump dry. On heated machines, follow the maker's guidance on water and descaling so mineral buildup does not damage the heating element. Using a water softener or descaler in hard water areas extends heater life.

Check Filters and Screens Regularly

A clogged filter chokes vacuum performance and can let debris reach the vacuum motor. Clean the inline filter and the recovery tank screen on a regular schedule. Keep vacuum hoses clear, since a partial clog quietly reduces water recovery and leaves carpet wetter.

Inspect Wear Items

• Check the vacuum shoe or wand glide for wear that hurts recovery
• Inspect hoses and cuffs for cracks and air leaks that reduce suction
• Look at the spray jets and replace clogged or worn tips for even spray
• Test cords and switches for safety

Storage Between Uses

Store the machine drained and dry. In cold climates, protect the pump and lines from freezing, since trapped water can crack components. A little antifreeze run through the system is common winter practice for vehicles and cold storage.
