Water Damage Classes Explained: How Much Water and How Fast It Dries
While water categories describe how contaminated the water is, water classes describe how much water is present and how difficult it will be to dry. The class guides how much drying equipment you set and how long the job takes. Here is what each class means.
Class 1: Least Amount of Water
Class 1 involves a small area with minimal absorption, such as water on a hard floor that has barely wicked into materials. These jobs dry quickly with modest equipment because there is little trapped moisture to remove.
Class 2: Significant Water and Absorption
Class 2 covers an entire room where water has wicked up walls and soaked into carpet and pad. There is more moisture in porous materials, so it needs more air movers and stronger dehumidification to dry in a reasonable time.
Class 3: Greatest Amount of Water
Class 3 is the most water of the standard classes, often from overhead, where ceilings, walls, insulation and floors are all saturated. These jobs demand the most equipment and careful monitoring to dry the structure fully.
Class 4: Specialty Drying
Class 4 involves materials that hold water tightly, such as hardwood, plaster, concrete and stone. These need specialty drying with low humidity and often targeted systems, because the moisture releases slowly. Patience and strong dehumidification are essential.
Matching Equipment to the Class
- Higher classes need more air movers to evaporate moisture from surfaces
- More evaporation means you need stronger dehumidifiers to remove it from the air
- Class 4 benefits from low grain refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifiers that reach low humidity
Monitor and Adjust
