Water Damage Categories Explained: Clean, Gray and Black Water

In water damage restoration, the first thing a professional determines is the category of water. It dictates safety precautions, what can be saved and how the job is cleaned. Whether you are a contractor or a property manager, understanding the three categories helps you respond correctly.

Category 1: Clean Water

Category 1 is water from a sanitary source, such as a supply line, a faucet left running or rainwater that has not picked up contaminants. It poses little health risk at first. The priority is fast drying, because clean water can degrade to a worse category within a couple of days if it sits, especially in warm conditions.

Category 2: Gray Water

Category 2, or gray water, carries some contamination that could cause illness. Sources include washing machine overflow, dishwasher discharge and toilet overflow with urine but no solids. Materials may be salvageable with proper cleaning and drying, but caution and disinfection are required.

Category 3: Black Water

Category 3, or black water, is grossly contaminated and can contain harmful bacteria. Sources include sewage, flooding from rivers and standing water that has begun to grow microbes. Porous materials like carpet, pad and drywall that have absorbed black water usually must be removed and disposed of, not dried in place.
