How to Pick the Right Carpet Extractor

A carpet extractor sprays cleaning solution into the pile and immediately vacuums it back up with a wand or attached brush head. Picking between a portable, self contained or truck mount style depends on tank size, water lift, heat and the kind of soils you face.

Portable vs Self Contained vs Truck Mount

  • Portable carpet extractors. Compact two tank machines with a wand and hose. Light to carry, ideal for stairs, vehicles and tight commercial spaces.
  • Self contained extractors. Walk behind units with brushes that scrub and extract in one pass. Faster on open hotel and office floors.
  • Truck mount alternatives. Large gas or electric machines with high vacuum and pressure for restoration work and large facility maintenance.

Heated vs Cold Water

Heated carpet extractors use an inline heater to raise solution temperature, which improves the chemistry of most cleaning agents and helps lift body oils, grease and pet stains. Cold water units cost less up front and stay reliable, but need more pre spray dwell time on tough soils. For janitorial maintenance cold water is often enough; for restoration and water damage work, heat earns its keep.

Tank Size and PSI

  • Under 5 gallons: spotters and small detail jobs
  • 5 to 10 gallons: most office and apartment work
  • 10 to 15 gallons: hotels and large floors
  • 15+ gallons: restoration and water extraction

Pump pressure of 60 to 200 PSI suits routine carpet cleaning. High pressure 500+ PSI machines are built for tile and grout cleaning with a hard surface tool, so look for that spec if you plan to use one machine across both surfaces.

Pair an extractor with an air scrubber for water damage cleanup or a commercial dehumidifier to dry the carpet faster after cleaning. For dry soil pickup before extraction, add a commercial vacuum to the kit.

What is the difference between a carpet extractor and a carpet shampooer?

A carpet extractor injects solution under pressure and pulls it back out with strong vacuum, removing soil and most of the moisture. A shampooer agitates foam into the carpet and relies on a separate dry vacuum step. Extractors finish faster and leave the carpet drier.

How long does carpet take to dry after extraction?

With a heated extractor and good airflow, most carpets are dry in 2 to 6 hours. Cold water units with low vacuum can leave carpets damp for 12 to 24 hours. Run an air scrubber or fan over the area to speed dry time.

Can I use a carpet extractor on auto upholstery?

Yes. Choose a portable spotter or detail extractor with a small upholstery tool. Use auto specific cleaning solution and lower pressure to avoid soaking foam padding underneath.

How often should I clean commercial carpet?

High traffic areas like hotel lobbies and entrances benefit from daily vacuuming, monthly interim cleaning and quarterly hot water extraction. Office cubicles can stretch to two or three times per year with regular vacuuming in between.
