Autoscrubber Buying Guide: Walk Behind, Stand On and Ride On

An autoscrubber transforms floor cleaning from a multi step labor intensive process into a single pass that scrubs, agitates and recovers in one motion. How an autoscrubber works

The machine carries a clean water and detergent tank, a scrub head with brushes or pads, a squeegee assembly and a recovery tank with vacuum motor. As the operator drives the machine forward, water and chemical lay down on the floor, the scrub brush agitates the soil, and the squeegee picks up the dirty water — all in one pass at walking speed.

Operator walks behind the machine, steering with handles. Best for spaces 5,000 to 30,000 square feet. Cleaning productivity 15,000 to 25,000 square feet per hour.

Pros: Lowest cost, most maneuverable in tight spaces, easy to train. Cons: Operator fatigue on long shifts, slower than ride on for large open floors.

Stand on autoscrubbers

Operator stands on a small platform behind the machine. Higher productivity than walk behind, lower cost than ride on. Best for spaces 20,000 to 50,000 square feet. Productivity 25,000 to 40,000 square feet per hour.

Pros: Faster than walk behind, less fatigue, better visibility than ride on. Cons: Less stability on slopes, slightly larger footprint than walk behind.

Ride on autoscrubbers

Operator sits on a seat, drives like a small vehicle. Best for spaces over 30,000 square feet. Productivity 30,000 to 80,000 square feet per hour for the largest models.

Pros: Highest productivity, lowest operator fatigue, multi shift capable. Cons: Largest footprint, highest cost, requires more training.

Sizing the deck

The scrub head width determines pass coverage. Wider deck = more square footage per pass but worse access in tight areas.

  • 17 inch deck — small spaces, restrooms, narrow aisles, restaurant kitchens
  • 20 inch deck — most retail and office spaces, the most common size
  • 26 to 28 inch deck — schools, hospitals, large retail
  • 32 to 36 inch deck — warehouses, distribution centers, large industrial
  • 40 inch and up — airports, manufacturing plants, large open floors

Tank capacity

Solution tank capacity determines runtime before refill. Recovery tank determines runtime before dump. Match the larger of the two to your facility size and the distance to the nearest sink.

  • 5 to 10 gallon — small spaces, frequent refills acceptable
  • 10 to 18 gallon — typical commercial facility
  • 20 to 30 gallon — schools, hospitals, large retail
  • 30 gallon and up — warehouses and industrial

Tip: solution tank should be slightly larger than recovery tank, since some water evaporates and some stays on the floor.

Power source

Battery (lead acid): 6 to 8 hour runtime depending on use. Lower upfront cost. Heavier. Requires watering and maintenance.

Battery (lithium ion): 8 to 12 hour runtime, faster charging, no maintenance, longer lifespan. Higher upfront cost but lower total cost over 5 years.

Cord electric: Lowest cost. Range limited by cord length. Best for small fixed routes.

Brush vs pad

Cylindrical brushes scrub like a cloth on a window — best for grout lines and rough surfaces. Disc brushes and pads scrub flat — best for smooth floors. Pads come in color coded grades from polishing white to aggressive black.

Squeegee design

The squeegee blade picks up the dirty water. Front and rear blade combinations leave the floor dry behind the machine. Tapered blades work better on grouted surfaces. Replace blades when streaking starts — usually every 200 to 400 hours.
