How to Clean and Disinfect a Gym

How to Clean and Disinfect a Gym

A gym is one of the most germ prone facilities there is. Sweat, high touch equipment and shared mats create the perfect conditions for bacteria and odor. A consistent cleaning and disinfecting routine keeps members healthy and the facility smelling fresh. Here is how to run one.

High Touch Surfaces First

The biggest risk in a gym is shared contact points. Disinfect these frequently throughout the day:

  • Equipment handles, grips and benches
  • Cardio machine consoles and rails
  • Free weights, dumbbells and bars
  • Door handles, water fountains and locker handles

Use a disinfectant with the proper dwell time, leaving the surface wet long enough to actually disinfect rather than wiping it dry immediately.

Floors and Mats

Gym floors collect dust, sweat and chalk. Vacuum or dust mop daily with a commercial vacuum, then deep scrub rubber flooring with a neutral cleaner on a regular cycle. Exercise mats need disinfecting, and a steam cleaner sanitizes mats and equipment with heat and little chemical residue.

Locker Rooms and Restrooms

  1. Disinfect showers, benches and lockers daily
  2. Deep clean tile and grout regularly to control mold and odor
  3. Keep drains clean to prevent smells
  4. Restock and sanitize high touch fixtures throughout the day

Controlling Odor

Gym odor comes from sweat and bacteria in floors, mats and upholstery. Regular deep cleaning removes the residue that feeds it. Steam cleaning equipment and mats, plus consistent floor scrubbing, addresses the source rather than masking it with fragrance.

Build a Schedule

Split tasks into throughout the day, daily and weekly buckets. High touch surfaces get frequent attention, floors get daily care, and deep cleaning of mats, tile and locker rooms runs weekly. The right equipment makes it manageable. See our steam cleaners and commercial vacuums for fitness facilities.
