How to Clean and Maintain a Wood Gym Floor

A hardwood gym floor, usually maple, is a major investment for a school or rec center. The wood itself lasts decades, but the finish is what takes the daily abuse from shoes, equipment and bleachers. Good maintenance protects that finish and delays expensive resanding.

Dust Mop Before and After Use

Grit and dust are abrasive and scratch the finish under foot traffic. Dust mop the entire floor before and after events with a wide treated dust mop. The more grit you remove, the longer the finish lasts. In bleacher areas and entries, a commercial vacuum reaches dust that a dust mop pushes around.

Damp Tacking, Not Wet Mopping

Wood and standing water do not mix. Never flood a gym floor. For routine cleaning, use a damp tack with a cleaner made for wood sport floors and a well wrung mop or an automatic system designed for wood. Excess water swells the boards and can cause cupping or finish damage.

Use Only Approved Cleaners

  • Use a cleaner formulated for wood gym floor finishes
  • Avoid general purpose cleaners, oil soaps and anything that leaves a film, since residue makes the floor slick and affects the next recoat
  • Never use abrasive pads or stiff brushes on the finish

Protect the Finish Day to Day

  1. Require non marking athletic shoes on the floor
  2. Use floor covers under bleachers, tables and chairs for events
  3. Roll equipment on soft wheels and avoid dragging
  4. Wipe up spills and sweat promptly to prevent slip hazards and finish damage
  5. Control humidity in the gym to keep the wood stable

Recoating and Resanding

On a regular schedule a gym floor gets a fresh coat of finish to renew the protective layer, and far less often a full sand and refinish. Keeping up daily dust mopping and damp tacking stretches the time between these costly services. For dust control around the floor and bleachers, keep a wide area vacuum on hand to cover the space quickly.

Protect the finish and the floor underneath will reward you for decades.
