How to Dry Water Damaged Walls Without Tearing Them Out
When walls get wet, the instinct is to tear out the drywall. Often that is not necessary. With the right technique, clean water damage in walls can be dried in place, saving demolition and rebuild costs. Here is how in place drying works and when it does not.
When You Can Dry in Place
In place drying is usually appropriate when the water is clean (Category 1) and you respond quickly before mold has a chance to grow. If the water was contaminated (Category 2 or 3) or the wall has been wet for days, removal of materials is generally the safer choice.
Get Air Into the Wall Cavity
The challenge with walls is that moisture hides inside the cavity behind the drywall. To dry it, you have to get airflow into that space. Common methods include:
- Removing the baseboard and drilling small ventilation holes near the base, hidden behind where the baseboard reinstalls
- Using a wall drying system or cavity drying accessory that pushes air behind the drywall
- Directing air movers at the wall surface to dry it from the room side
Control the Room Humidity
Air movers push the moisture from the wall into the room air, so a dehumidifier has to remove it or the wall will not keep drying. Set the dehumidifier to hold a low humidity in the space so the wall continues to release moisture.
Monitor the Cavity, Not Just the Surface
Drywall can feel dry on the surface while the cavity and bottom plate are still wet. Use a moisture meter, including pin probes for inside the cavity, to confirm the wall is actually drying. Document readings daily so you know when to stop.
When to Switch to Removal
If readings stall, the water was contaminated, or insulation in the cavity is saturated, in place drying may not work and removal becomes the right call. Wet fiberglass insulation in particular holds water and usually has to come out. Equip in place drying with our air movers and dehumidifiers.
