What Is Psychrometry in Water Damage Drying?

Behind every successful structural drying job is a bit of science called psychrometry, the study of air and the moisture it holds. You do not need a degree to use it, but understanding a few terms helps you dry faster and know when a structure is actually dry.

The Key Idea: Air Holds Moisture

Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Drying works by getting moisture to evaporate from wet materials into the air, then removing that moisture with a dehumidifier. If the air is already full of moisture, evaporation slows, which is why humidity control is central to drying.

Terms Worth Knowing

  • Relative humidity: how full the air is with moisture, as a percentage
  • Temperature: warmer air evaporates moisture faster and holds more
  • Grains per pound (GPP): the actual amount of moisture in the air, a more precise measure than relative humidity for drying decisions
  • Dew point: the temperature at which moisture begins to condense

Why Grains Matter More Than Percent

Relative humidity changes with temperature, so two rooms at the same percentage can hold very different amounts of water. Restorers track grains per pound to compare the moisture inside a drying chamber with the outside air and confirm the dehumidifier is actually pulling water out.

By comparing moisture readings in materials against a dry standard, you avoid pulling equipment too early or running it longer than needed. For low humidity drying of stubborn materials, consider desiccant dehumidifiers that reach very low grain levels.
