One condenser, up to six rooms

One condenser, up to six rooms

Every head has its own line set back to the condenser and its own remote and setpoint, so a cold bedroom and a warm kitchen are handled separately. The 3-zone condenser takes two or three heads, and the 4-, 5- and 6-zone models take up to four, five and six.

You buy the condenser, the heads and one line set per head. Plan the exact combination on MRCOOL's match-up chart before ordering.

Mix wall heads and ceiling cassettes

Mix wall heads and ceiling cassettes

MRCOOL's match-up chart lets any head in a combination be either a wall-mounted air handler or an OuttaSight ceiling cassette. The cassette recesses between joists on 16" centers, which keeps the walls clear in rooms where a wall unit would be in the way.

Choose the head type room by room; what has to match the chart is the combination of capacities.

Plan every line run first

Plan every line run first

Each head can sit up to 75' of line from the condenser, and the total for all heads is capped at 172' on the 3-zone model and 221' on the 4-, 5- and 6-zone models. Each run also needs at least 9.8' of line to keep vibration and noise down.

Measure every route before ordering. Heads on interior walls usually need their lines routed through an attic, basement or crawlspace.

Find answers below or contact our support team.

How many indoor units can each multi-zone condenser run?

The 18k condenser runs two or three heads, the 27k model up to four, the 36k model up to five, and the 48k and 55k models up to six. Every combination needs at least two heads, and the mix of capacities must appear on MRCOOL's match-up chart.

Are the air handlers and line sets included with the condenser?

No, the condenser is sold on its own. Each zone needs a DIY 5th Gen 208/230V air handler or OuttaSight cassette, plus a Quick Connect line set sized to that head: 1/4" x 3/8" for 6,000 to 12,000 BTU, 1/4" x 1/2" for 18,000 BTU and 3/8" x 5/8" for 24,000 and 36,000 BTU. The 5- and 6-zone condensers include the adapter set for 24,000 BTU and larger heads.

Can I use the 115V wall air handlers on a multi-zone condenser?

No. The multi-zone condensers run on 208/230V and their match-ups use the 208/230V heads. The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU 115V air handlers pair only with the 115V single-zone condensers of the same size.

Which wall air handler goes with a single-zone DIY 5th Gen condenser?

Match capacity and voltage. The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU 115V heads go with the 115V condensers, and the 18,000, 24,000 and 36,000 BTU 208/230V heads go with the condensers of the same size. The 12,000 and 18,000 BTU 208/230V heads also pair with the DIY Hyper Heat condensers. The 6,000 and 9,000 BTU 208/230V heads are for multi-zone use.

How cold can it get outside for a DIY multi-zone system?

MRCOOL rates the 18k to 48k multi-zone condensers for heating down to -13°F outdoors and the 55k model down to -22°F. Cooling is rated up to 122°F on all of them.

Can I install a multi-zone system myself?

Yes. It uses the same pre-charged Quick Connect line sets as the single-zone systems, but it takes more planning: measure every route, check the per-head and total length limits in the manual, and on the 4-, 5- and 6-zone condensers open the two main valves after the individual line valves. The electrical work must still meet local code.
