HeatWise belongs indoors, in a clean and dry space protected from freezing such as a utility or laundry room, on a floor strong enough for the filled tank. MRCOOL rules out bathrooms, outdoor locations and other humid or open areas.
Leave working room in front of the access panels for thermostat and element service, and set a drained catch pan underneath where a leak could damage the floor or rooms below.
The steel tank is lined with an anti-bacterial enamel coating, and a rare earth magnesium anode rod corrodes in place of the tank; MRCOOL rates that rod to last 50% longer than standard anodes. A flow guide limits sediment buildup, and the elements are ceramic coated against mineral scale.
MRCOOL still recommends a yearly tank cleaning by a qualified plumber to clear sediment from the elements.

A separate 240V or 208V single-phase branch circuit with copper conductors, a ground and GFCI protection. MRCOOL's manual recommends a 25 A breaker on 240V and a 20 A breaker on 208V, where the elements run at 3,380W instead of 4,500W. A licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire to local code.
Match capacity to the household's hot water use, then check the space. Standard tanks: 30 gallons is 21.6" across and 36.7" high, 40 gallons 21.6" x 45.5" and 50 gallons 23.8" x 45.6". Lowboy tanks for low headroom: 28 gallons is 20.05" x 30.1" and 38 gallons 22.8" x 32.1". Tall tanks for narrow closets: 40 gallons is 19.3" x 59.9" and 50 gallons 20.5" x 60.1". Allow extra room for the top pipe connections and in front of the access panels.
The thermostats adjust from 90°F to 150°F and are set to 120°F at the factory. MRCOOL suggests 120°F or lower in homes with small children, elderly or disabled residents, because hotter water raises the risk of scalding.
Indoors, in a clean, dry area protected from freezing, on a floor that can carry the full tank. MRCOOL prohibits installation in bathrooms, outdoors or other humid or open spaces. Where a leak could damage the floor or rooms below, fit a drained catch pan underneath.
A temperature and pressure relief valve rated no higher than 150 PSI must be fitted in the marked opening and piped to an open drain. If the water supply has a check valve or backflow preventer, the system is closed and MRCOOL calls for an expansion tank on the cold line to absorb thermal expansion.
No. A licensed plumber should set the tank, plumb the water lines and relief valve, and a licensed electrician should wire the 240V circuit. The tank must be completely full of water before the power is switched on, since switching it on dry damages the heating elements.
