Got Questions?

Find answers below or contact our support team.

Does the air handler come with an outdoor unit?

No. This listing is the indoor air handler only. It pairs with a Signature Series cooling-only or heat pump condenser of the same capacity, the combinations MRCOOL has AHRI-rated.

Can it go in an attic or crawl space?

Yes. It installs upflow, downflow, horizontal left or horizontal right, with horizontal right as the factory setup. For downflow and horizontal left the contractor relocates the built-in refrigerant leak sensor, as MRCOOL's manual describes. Leave at least 25" in front of the cabinet for filter and coil service.

Does it have built-in heat?

Not by itself. MRCOOL lists 5kW, 7.5kW and 10kW electric heat kits that mount in the cabinet for backup or primary electric heat. They are sold separately and must be wired by a licensed contractor on their own circuit.

What size filter does it take?

The filter slides in behind a removable cover on the cabinet. MRCOOL's manual lists 18.1" x 21.4" for the 1.5 to 3.5-ton sizes and 20.5" x 23.8" for the 4 and 5-ton sizes, up to 1" thick; the filter can be vacuumed or rinsed and reused. MRCOOL also calls for filtration in the return-air system, so your contractor fits a return filter as well.

Do I need a special thermostat?

No. A thermostat is not included, and MRCOOL says the air handler works with most third-party thermostats and HVAC controls. Your contractor wires it to suit the condenser you pair it with.

Can I install the air handler myself?

No. The coil ships without a refrigerant charge, so a licensed HVAC contractor with EPA refrigerant certification has to braze and pressure-test the lines, evacuate and charge the system, set the correct piston for the condenser and wire it.
