Does the stud-mount air handler come with an outdoor unit?

No. This listing is the indoor air handler only. It is AHRI-rated with the Signature Series heat pump or cooling-only condenser of the same capacity, from 1.5 to 3 tons.

Where can the stud-mount air handler be installed?

MRCOOL allows a closet, alcove, utility room or basement with the minimum clearances kept. It hangs from its wall bracket screwed into studs, never into bare drywall, or mounts inside a frame, and either structure must carry at least 150 lbs. It has to sit level both ways so the condensate drains.

Does it have built-in heat?

Not as shipped. With a heat pump condenser it heats through the refrigerant system, and MRCOOL offers optional 5, 7.5 and 10 kW electric heat kits that fit inside the cabinet for backup or cooling-only systems. A heat kit raises the circuit size the air handler needs.

What size filter does it take?

The built-in filter rack takes a 15" x 19" x 1" filter on the 1.5 and 2-ton models and a 20" x 20" x 1" filter on the 2.5 and 3-ton models. MRCOOL recommends inspecting, cleaning or replacing it at least once a month.

Why does it have a refrigerant sensor?

The Signature line uses R-454B, a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant, so the air handler carries a leak sensor. If it detects refrigerant, the compressor and any electric heat stop while the blower keeps running. The sensor must stay powered except during service and has a 15-year service life.

Can I install the air handler myself?

No. It connects to the condenser through brazed refrigerant lines charged with an A2L refrigerant, so a licensed HVAC contractor with EPA refrigerant certification has to mount it, braze and pressure test the lines, wire it and start the system up.
