Got Questions?

Find answers below or contact our support team.

Can I install a Universal system myself?

No. The Universal is a split system with field-connected refrigerant lines, so a licensed HVAC contractor with EPA refrigerant certification has to set both units, connect and leak-check the lines, wire them and start the system. That applies even when MRCOOL's pre-charged No-Vac Quick Connect line sets are used.

Does it come with a line set?

No. Every size uses 3/8" liquid and 3/4" suction lines, either MRCOOL's optional No-Vac Quick Connect sets pre-charged with R-454B or contractor-supplied copper with flare or flare-to-sweat connections. The factory charge covers 24.6'; maximum length is 164' on sizes up to 30,000 BTU and 246' on the 36,000 to 60,000 BTU sizes.

How well does it heat in a cold climate?

MRCOOL lists outdoor operation down to -22°F and rates the Universal for 100% heat output at -13°F. At 5°F, for example, the 48,000 BTU pair is rated at 48,000 BTU/h. Optional electric heat kits add emergency heat for colder spells.

Is a thermostat included?

No thermostat appears in the Universal packing list. The system runs from a 24V thermostat, such as the MRCOOL Smart Thermostat. The packing list includes an adapter cable for full 24V communication but does not say which carton holds it, so confirm it with the air handler order.

Which air handler goes with a Universal condenser?

MRCOOL rates each UHP condenser with the UAH multi-position air handler of the same capacity, for example UHP18048-O with UAH18048-O, and its warranty is void with an incompatible or unapproved air handler. The UAH air handler accepts 115V, 208V or 230V and detects the supply on its own.

Why is the 5-ton model rated at 54,000 BTU?

The 60,000 BTU pair is sold as a 5-ton size, but MRCOOL rates its cooling capacity at 54,000 BTU/h (heating 55,000 BTU/h). Size the system from a load calculation rather than the nominal tonnage.
