Tubular steel heat exchanger at the core

Tubular steel heat exchanger at the core

Combustion gases pass through a tubular heat exchanger made of aluminized steel, while the circulating blower pushes house air across the outside of the tubes. The 96% models add a stainless steel secondary exchanger that pulls extra heat from the exhaust.

The exchanger is the part a furnace cannot work without, so its material matters for a unit expected to run many winters.

Got Questions?

Find answers below or contact our support team.

Can a VersaPro furnace run on propane?

Yes. VersaPro furnaces leave the factory set for natural gas, and MRCOOL's current brochure and catalog list an LP conversion kit as included. The installing gas contractor fits the kit and checks the input and manifold pressure after the change.

Does the furnace also give me air conditioning?

Not on its own. A furnace only heats. For cooling, a contractor adds a cased evaporator coil on top of the furnace and connects it to an outdoor condenser or heat pump, and the furnace blower then moves the cooled air. MRCOOL's spec sheet for the 80% range lists add-on cooling from 1 to 5 tons depending on the model.

Do I need anything extra with an R-454B cooling coil?

Yes. R-454B is an A2L refrigerant, and MRCOOL's furnace manual requires a refrigerant leak detection sensor when the furnace is paired with a coil using it. The sensor ships with the coil and wires into the furnace control board, which then responds if a leak is detected.

What filter size does it take?

A side return takes a 16x25x1 filter. A bottom return filter depends on cabinet width: 14x25, 16x25, 20x25 or 24x25. The filter is not part of the furnace, so plan a filter rack or return grille with the installer.

How is a VersaPro furnace vented?

It depends on the efficiency tier. The 80% models are Category I fan-assisted furnaces that vent through a Type B-1 metal vent or chimney. The 96% models are condensing furnaces vented with 2" or 3" pipe, and MRCOOL offers a concentric vent kit that runs intake and exhaust through one roof or wall opening.

Which input size should I choose?

Size it with a heat-loss calculation for the house, not by matching the old nameplate. Inputs run from 40,000 to 120,000 BTU/h, and an oversized furnace short-cycles. Your HVAC contractor should also confirm the cabinet width suits the existing ductwork.
