Heavy scaling on coated steel

Heavy scaling on coated steel

The 28PG drives twenty-eight 3mm chisel tip needles at 2200 blows per minute, a slower, heavier stroke than the 19-needle tools. It breaks up thick paint systems, pack rust and scale on structural steel and plate, and the wider bundle covers more surface per pass.

Pick the 28PG when the coating is heavy or the area is large; for light rust and tight detail, the smaller 19PG is easier to control.

Coating removal before recoating

Coating removal before recoating

Run across failing paint, the 28PG needle bundle fractures the film and lifts it with the rust beneath, leaving a peened steel surface with texture for the next coat to key into. Light, steady pressure is all it needs; leaning on the tool slows it down.

Dress for it: hearing protection, eye protection and a respirator matched to the coating are part of the job, and the work area needs cleanup after scaling.

One body, needles or chisels

One body, needles or chisels

The same 28PG body runs needles, a 1/2" square chisel holder or a 5/8" hex chisel holder. The hex version takes the long reach range of 1", 2" and 4" chisels and the 4", 8" and 12" scraper heads, so one tool can strip floor tile as well as scale steel.

Choose the needle scaler for rust and coatings, a chisel scaler for spatter and slag, or one of the two kits to carry both setups.

Got Questions?

Find answers below or contact our support team.

What size air compressor does the 28PG need?

Novatek rates the 28PG at 7.5 cfm (220 lpm) of air, and the tool is meant to run at 90 psi at the inlet. Use a 3/8" bore airline, keep the run to about 50' where you can, and put a filter, regulator and lubricator in the line so the air reaches the tool clean, dry and oiled.

What is the Super Scraper Chisel Scaler?

It is the 28PG chisel scaler with a 5/8" hex chisel holder instead of the 1/2" square one. The hex holder takes Novatek's long reach chisels and scraper heads, which suits tile, mastic and thick deposit removal. The needle kit with Super Scraper adds 5/8" hex chisels in 1", 2" and 4" widths.

How many needles does the 28PG hold?

It ships with 28 x 3mm x 7" chisel tip needles. With the matching needle holders it takes 65 x 2mm needles or 19 x 4mm needles.

28PG or 19PG: which should I buy?

The 28PG hits harder with a wider bundle at 2200 bpm and weighs 8.3 lbs; the 19PG is lighter at 5.7 lbs with a quicker 3000 bpm stroke. Use the 28PG for heavy coatings and large areas, the 19PG for lighter rust and longer overhead work.

Does the 28PG need oiling?

Yes. Put three drops of light machine oil into the air inlet before you start, and run an inline lubricator if you have one. Novatek's manual notes that running its scalers without air preparation could void the warranty.

Can I use the 28PG around flammable material?

No. Novatek says the 28PG is not built for explosive atmospheres or for work close to flammable materials, and a steel needle striking steel can spark. Wear hearing and eye protection and a dust mask suited to the coating you are removing.
