Air Scrubber vs Air Purifier: Airflow, Filters and Which One a Job Needs

XPOWER AP-2000 HEPA air filtration system, front view on its casters

How we made this guide: picks, prices and specs come from our catalog and the makers' published specs, owner quotes come from customer reviews on our product pages and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.

Pick an air scrubber for remediation, renovation or restoration work. Pick a household air purifier for everyday room air. The scrubbers we carry in this comparison run from the XPOWER X-2800 at $680 (rated 550 CFM) to the Abatement Technologies HEPA-AIRE PAS1700 at $2,900 (up to 1,650 CFM). For most contractors the Abatement PAS750 at $1,139 is the pick: up to 750 CFM, a HEPA filter certified to 99.97 percent at 0.3 micron, 33.5 lb and the best seller of these six. The XPOWER X-2800 is the lower-priced compact option.

The words overlap, and that is the trap. Some heating and cooling companies also use "air scrubber" for other home air-cleaning products; this guide covers the portable HEPA air scrubbers used on job sites. A scrubber is a portable job-site machine with staged filters, a rated airflow in the hundreds or thousands of CFM and, on many models, a duct outlet. A purifier is usually a room appliance built to run quietly. We do not carry household purifiers, so every number below comes from the makers' sheets for the machines in our range.

Quick answer

Contractors: buy a scrubber. Rated airflow, a ducting option and stackable cabinets matter on a work site, and the machines below are built for it. Everyday room air at home or in a small office: a quiet purifier is the better tool. Read how a scrubber works in what is an air scrubber, or browse all air scrubbers.

Air scrubber vs air purifier at a glance

This table compares the two categories. The scrubber column reflects the six machines in this guide. The purifier column is the general pattern for household units, not a figure from any one product.

Feature Air scrubber Household air purifier
Main job Dust, debris and airborne particles on a work site Everyday room air
Rated airflow here 550 to 2,000 CFM Rated differently, usually by CADR (see below)
Filter stages Washable or pleated pre-filters, then HEPA, sometimes carbon Often a single filter or a short stack
Ducting Duct connections on the three XPOWER units and a 10 inch exhaust outlet on the PAS750, so they can be ducted for negative air Rarely
Build Stackable cabinets, carrying handles or casters Furniture-style housing
Noise Rated on few job-site sheets (PAS750: 62 to 67 dBA) Built to run quietly
Rated by The maker's CFM rating CADR from AHAM's test program
Sizing rule Air changes per hour: CFM x 60 / room volume (our calculation) AHAM: smoke CADR at least two-thirds of floor area, ceilings up to 8 ft
Where it runs Sealed work areas and job sites Occupied rooms
Price in our range $680 to $2,900 for these six We do not carry household purifiers

What they have in common

Both pull room air through filters, and both can use a HEPA filter as the last stage. Both treat only the air that reaches them, so closed doors and run time matter. Neither dries the air or fixes the source of dust, odor or moisture.

The naming trap: the AP-2000 is called a purifier

The XPOWER AP-2000 is sold as a "portable 3 stage filtration HEPA air purifier system", yet its spec rows list a rated airflow of 2,000 CFM, a unit weight of 112.4 lb and 8.5 amps on a 25 ft cord. That is job-site equipment, not a bedroom appliance. The XPOWER X-3780's name uses both words, "purifier system air scrubber", and it is a 600 CFM, 32.2 lb machine with a top carry handle and intake and exhaust duct connections, per XPOWER's manual.

The lesson: judge a machine by its rated CFM, filter stack, weight and amp draw, not by whether the title says purifier or scrubber.

Machine Price Rated airflow Filtration as listed Power as listed Weight
XPOWER AP-2000 $1,485 2,000 CFM 3-stage, filter change indicator 8.5 A 112.4 lb
Abatement PAS1700 $2,900 Up to 1,650 CFM True HEPA, 99.97% at 0.3 micron 120 VAC, 15 A supply 85 lb
Abatement PRED1200UV $2,580 Up to 900 CFM HEPA, 99.97% at 0.3 micron, UVGI lamp Under 3.5 A
Abatement PAS750 $1,139 Up to 750 CFM HEPA certified 99.97% at 0.3 micron 1.9 A or less 33.5 lb
XPOWER X-3780 $846 600 CFM 4-stage with carbon and HEPA50 2.8 A 32.2 lb
XPOWER X-2800 $680 550 CFM 3-stage with HEPA65-33 2.8 A 23.7 lb

Airflow: how much air each one moves

Airflow is the clearest dividing line. The scrubbers in this guide carry maker ratings from 550 CFM on the X-2800 to 2,000 CFM on the AP-2000. Maker ratings for CFM are not always taken at the same conditions, so treat them as a way to rank the machines, not as a promise of a result in your room.

Household purifiers are normally rated another way. The common figure is CADR, the clean air delivery rate from AHAM's test program, which is a different measurement from a scrubber's CFM. AHAM's guidance for room air cleaners is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet, for ceilings up to 8 feet, so a 10 by 12 foot room calls for a smoke CADR of at least 80. That works out to about 5 air changes per hour in that room (our calculation: 80 x 60 / 960 cubic feet), using the same formula as for the scrubbers below. If you are shopping on CADR, compare it only with other CADR numbers.

For air changes per hour, Abatement lists the PRED1200UV at 6 in 9,000 cubic feet, which matches its 900 CFM rating. At the PAS1700's rated 1,650 CFM, 6 air changes per hour covers about 16,500 cubic feet (our calculation: 1,650 x 60 / 6). To size your own room, multiply the CFM by 60 and divide by the cubic feet of air in the room. For example, a 550 CFM machine in a 4,000 cubic foot room works out to about 8 air changes per hour (our calculation, using the rated figure). Real results depend on how the machine is set up and which filters are installed.

Filters: HEPA, carbon and the stage count

Both categories can use HEPA filters. A true HEPA filter is rated to capture 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 micron, and Abatement lists that rating for the PAS750, PAS1700 and PRED1200UV. XPOWER's spec rows and owner's manuals for the AP-2000, X-3780 and X-2800 name a HEPA filter but list no tested efficiency. For more on how HEPA ratings work, see what is a HEPA filter.

So do air purifiers actually clean the air? Within limits: a true HEPA filter is rated to capture 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 micron that pass through it, and how much of the room's air it treats depends on its CADR or CFM against the room size, closed doors and whether the dust source is controlled. We do not make health claims, and none of these machines is sold to treat a medical condition. Ask a physician about breathing problems.

Count stages from the maker's sheet, not the product title. The X-2800 title says 5-stage, but its spec row lists a 3-stage filter system with a HEPA65-33 third stage, and XPOWER's owner's manual lists three filters for it: an NFS13 nylon mesh, a PF13 pleated media filter and a HEPA65-33. The X-3780 lists four stages: a washable nylon mesh pre-filter, a pleated media filter, a CF35 activated carbon filter and a HEPA50 filter. The Abatement HEPA-AIRE PAS750 lists a coarse Fiber-Trapper pre-filter, a 2 inch pleated pre-filter and the HEPA filter, with an optional 2 inch Vapor-Lock carbon filter.

Noise: what the sheets list

Purifiers are designed to run quietly in a room. Scrubbers are tools. Among the six machines here, only the Abatement PAS750 lists a noise level: 62 to 67 dBA. The other five sheets list no noise level. On a job site that rarely matters. In an occupied office, check the noise rating of any machine before you buy it and plan for it to run loud.

Power and weight: where the machine can go

Amps and weight decide where you can place a machine. The AP-2000 draws 8.5 A and weighs 112.4 lb, so it wants a planned spot and a short run to the outlet. The PAS750 lists a draw of 1.9 amps or less and a 33.5 lb net weight, the X-3780 draws 2.8 A at 32.2 lb, and the X-2800 draws 2.8 A at 23.7 lb. The PRED1200UV lists less than 3.5 amps at 120 VAC. The PAS1700 lists a supply requirement of 120 VAC and 15 amps, the standard outlet circuit the PAS750 also lists, rather than a running draw. It weighs 85 lb and has a built-in transport dolly.

XPOWER's manual allows stacking up to five X-3780 units.

Cord length differs too: 25 ft on the AP-2000, 13 ft on the X-3780 and X-2800. Check the cord against your layout before you plan a run.

Pick the AP-2000 if you clean large open spaces

The AP-2000 is the highest-rated machine in this guide and the one whose name misleads most. Its sheet lists two speeds, a filter change indicator for the primary HEPA filter, ETL and CETL safety certification, stackable housing and a 1-year limited warranty. XPOWER's owner's manual lists two nonwoven pre-filters and a 12 inch wood box HEPA filter, a pressure gauge that signals loaded filters when it reads above 400 pascals, an optional exhaust duct and stacking of up to three units. The trade-off is size: at 112.4 lb it is a two-person move on stairs.

Skip it if you need a unit one person can carry, or if the room is small. See more from XPOWER air scrubbers.

Skip it if you do not need the lamp: the PREDATOR PRED1200 lists the same 900 CFM and 99.97 percent filtration for $2,230, and the PAS750 costs less again.

Which one by job

Job Better fit Why
Mold remediation or demolition dust Scrubber Rated airflow, staged filters and ducting for negative air
Water-loss restoration Scrubber Stackable, rugged and easy to move between rooms
Large open space such as a gym or hotel lobby AP-2000 or PAS1700 Highest rated airflow in this guide
Small office or clinic room X-2800 or X-3780 Lighter, 2.8 A, sensor or filter change light
Everyday living room or bedroom Household purifier Built to be quiet and compact
Wet air or high humidity Dehumidifier first A filter does not dry the air; see dehumidifier vs air purifier

Negative air is a separate topic. A scrubber with a duct outlet can help hold a room under pressure, but the pressure target comes from the job and the standard, not the machine. For more, read what is a negative pressure room.

Frequently asked questions

What is an air scrubber for mold?

It is a HEPA air scrubber run during mold remediation so the dust and particles stirred up while moldy material is removed are pulled through its filters instead of settling elsewhere. Inside containment it is often ducted to exhaust out of the work area, which keeps the space under negative pressure. The machine does not remove mold from surfaces: remediation does, and the IICRC S520 standard covers that process. See what is an air scrubber.

Is an air scrubber the same as an air purifier?

Not quite. Both use filters, but a scrubber is a portable job-site machine with a rated CFM, staged filtration and often ducting. A purifier is usually a quieter room appliance.

Do air purifiers actually clean the air?

A HEPA-based purifier is rated to capture a share of the particles that pass through its filter, and a true HEPA filter is rated at 99.97 percent at 0.3 micron. It only treats the air that reaches the filter, so placement and run time matter. We make no health claims.

Do air scrubbers remove dust?

Scrubbers move room air through pre-filters and a HEPA filter, which is rated to capture particles including fine dust. Fix the dust source and keep doors closed so the machine is not fighting an open dust supply.

Are air scrubbers worth the cost?

For contractors, yes. The machines here run from $680 to $2,900, and HEPA filters are not washable (per XPOWER's manuals), so price replacement filters along with the machine. For a home bedroom, a household purifier is the lower-priced fit.

Would an air purifier help my COPD?

We cannot give medical advice. Ask your physician what is right for your condition.

Do air purifiers help with viruses?

We make no health claim for any machine here. A HEPA filter is rated by the size of particles it captures, and that rating says nothing about illness.
