How to Choose a Thermal Imager

A thermal imaging camera produces a colour map of surface temperature, which makes invisible problems visible: missing insulation, water leaks, overloaded breakers, slipping bearings. Pick the resolution to match the work and check thermal sensitivity, accuracy and supported analytics.

Resolution

  • 80 by 60 to 160 by 120. Entry level. Useful for residential energy audits, pest inspection and basic moisture detection.
  • 240 by 180 to 320 by 240. Professional building science and electrical maintenance work.
  • 384 by 288 to 640 by 512. Industrial inspection, fire service, R&D. Captures small temperature differences across large objects from a safe distance.

Thermal Sensitivity (NETD)

NETD measures the smallest temperature difference the camera can detect. 50 mK or lower is excellent (energy auditing, building science). 100 mK is acceptable for most maintenance work. Higher numbers (less sensitive) struggle with subtle wet area or insulation gaps.

MSX, Wi Fi and Reporting

MSX overlays the visible camera image on the thermal image so labels, gauges and serial plates remain readable. Wi Fi connectivity sends images to a phone or tablet for instant reporting. Voice and text annotation on captured images saves hours of post job documentation.

Pair a thermal imager with a moisture meter to confirm whether a cool spot is a wet area or just a draft, and a clamp meter for electrical maintenance work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a thermal imager and a thermal camera?

The two terms are used interchangeably. Both measure surface temperature and produce a colour image. Some manufacturers reserve "thermal imager" for handheld scanning tools and "thermal camera" for fixed installations and high resolution scientific instruments.

What resolution do I need for home inspection?

For residential home inspection and energy auditing, 160 by 120 is the entry level recommended by InterNACHI and most state building science programs. 240 by 180 or 320 by 240 captures more detail and reads better in client reports.

Can a thermal imager see through walls?

No. Thermal imagers see surface temperature only. They cannot see through drywall or wood. They can show patterns of warmer or cooler surfaces caused by moisture, missing insulation, framing or pipes behind the wall, but they cannot image hidden objects directly.

Are FLIR thermal cameras worth the price?

FLIR is the leading commercial thermal camera brand with mature software, accessories, training and parts support. For paid inspection and industrial work, the support and image quality usually make FLIR worth the higher up front cost compared with budget brands.
