How we made this guide: picks, prices and specs come from our catalog and the makers' published specs, owner quotes come from customer reviews on our product pages and every guide is checked and edited by Trevor Hall.
A consumer shop vac is fine for the odd spill, but crews that pick up water every week want a commercial canister like the Tornado TaskForce 20 with Trot-Mop at $699: 20 gallons and 90 inches of water lift. For hard-floor floods, the Minuteman Tsunami, from $1,386, lists 95 inches of lift and a 24 inch squeegee. The budget pick is the Dapper Supply 16 gallon at $220.
Quick answer
Compare water lift and CFM, not peak horsepower. The TaskForce 20 is the best seller of these six on our store. The Tsunami lists the most water lift of the six at 95 inches. Browse every wet/dry vacuum we carry, the commercial vacuums or the industrial vacuums.

Peak HP is not suction
Shop vac boxes lead with peak horsepower. The makers' own footnotes describe it as a laboratory figure for the motor's maximum output, one the motor never reaches in normal use, and it says nothing about how hard the vacuum pulls at the hose. Our calculation shows why: the Dapper Supply 16 gallon's 3,750 W peak figure divided by its 110 V rating is about 34 A, more than twice what a standard 15 A outlet supplies. Two other numbers describe pickup: water lift, in inches, which is the height of water column the vacuum can raise, and airflow in CFM, which is how much air moves through the hose.
The Dapper Supply 16 gallon has the biggest horsepower figure here, yet the lowest lift at 76.3 inches. The Tsunami lists a 1.3 HP motor and 95 inches. Makers rate lift and CFM under their own test conditions, so treat cross-brand comparisons as a guide.
For pulling water off a floor, lift matters when the hose is long or the water is heavy with solids, and CFM matters for how fast a big surface clears. Of these six, the Tsunami lists the most water lift at 95 inches. In our range only Tornado's compressed-air jumbo vacs list more: the Tornado JA Single Air lists 242 inches on a 55 gallon drum, and its listing recommends at least a 15 hp air compressor. The Mercury Storm lists the most airflow of the six at 225 CFM, and the Dapper Supply 26.5 gallon lists up to 222 CFM.
Wet capacity is not dry capacity
Read the tank number twice. The Mercury Storm WVC-20 lists a 20 gallon dry capacity and a 15 gallon wet capacity, because a ball float closes off the airflow before the water reaches the motor. Mercury's owner's manual says the sound changes and suction at the hose drops when the float closes. The motor keeps running, so switch it off and empty the tank; the manual adds that running on past a full tank voids the warranty.
Weight follows the tank. The Tsunami lists 65 lb empty and 240 lb with a full 16 gallon tank, so you never lift or tip it. Minuteman's manual says to wheel the full machine to a drain and empty it through the dump hose, and the Mercury Storm drains through a disposal hose too. By our calculation 20 gallons of water weighs about 167 lb (8.34 lb per gallon), so plan the drain point before the job.
Set the machine up for water before you start. Mercury's manual says the cloth filter is for dry pickup only and must come out for wet use, and Minuteman's has you remove the cloth or paper bag. Use a defoamer when you pick up detergent or stripper solution: Mercury's manual says running without it voids the warranty. Both manuals bar flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline. How to use a shop vac for water covers filters and emptying step by step.
Best for weekly water pickup: Tornado TaskForce 20 with Trot-Mop

Best overall
Tornado Taskforce 20 Wet/Dry Industrial Canister Vacuum With Trot-Mop (94236)
$699
A 20 gallon commercial canister for crews that handle leaks and floods every week.
The TaskForce 20 is the vac we would point a maintenance crew to first. It lists a 1.61 HP motor, 90 inches of water lift, 114 CFM, a 20 gallon tank and two-stage dust-free filtration. A 360 degree rotating hose keeps the line from kinking. The kit carries the Trot-Mop front-mount squeegee, a 14 inch rug tool, crevice tool, dust tool and squeegee tool. It is the best seller of these six on our store.
Pros
- 20 gallon tank, 90 inches of water lift and 114 CFM
- Sold with the Trot-Mop front-mount squeegee, plus rug, crevice, dust and squeegee tools
- Built-in transport wheels
Cons
- Warranty terms are not on our listing
Skip it if you want the most lift or a long listed warranty: the Tsunami lists 95 inches and 5 years on parts. For room-by-room water and floor work, this is the balanced choice, one step up from the TaskForce 15 at $499.
Best for hard-floor floods: Minuteman Tsunami 16 Gallon

Best squeegee vac
Minuteman Tsunami 16-Gallon Wet/Dry Squeegee Vacuum
From $1,386
A 24 inch front squeegee, 95 inches of lift and a 50 ft cord for big hard floors.

The Tsunami is a different tool from a shop vac. It pulls water through a 24 inch front-mounted squeegee with urethane blades, so one pass lifts a strip of floor without a mop. Minuteman lists a 1.3 HP vacuum motor at 125 CFM and 95 inches of water lift, a 16 gallon tank, 74 dB of noise and a 50 ft quick-disconnect extension cord. It draws 13 A on a 15 A circuit, so give it the circuit to itself.
The T16W is the wet model at $1,386. The T16WD adds the wet/dry tool kit with a 10 ft hose, two-piece aluminum wand and floor, carpet, squeegee, hand and crevice tools, at $1,557. Minuteman's commercial warranty for corded machines gives 5 years on parts, 3 years on labor and 12 years on the polyethylene body.
Pros
- Highest water lift of these six, 95 inches
- 24 inch front squeegee covers a floor fast
- 5 years parts and 3 years labor as listed
Cons
- The most expensive of the commercial canisters here
- 65 lb empty and 240 lb full, so it needs a plan for emptying
Skip it if your pickup is mostly carpet or debris in a few rooms. A squeegee earns its price on smooth hard floors. The T16WD kit adds the tools for dry work.
Best for two motors and big loads: Mercury Storm WVC-20

Best twin-motor
Mercury Storm Wet/Dry 20-Gallon Vacuum with 5-Piece Tool Kit - Chromed Steel Tank WVC-20
$649.95
Two motors, 225 CFM and a chromed steel tank for contractors and maintenance teams.
The Mercury Storm WVC-20 runs two motors of 1.335 HP each, listed as 2.67 HP and 2,000 W together. Mercury lists 225 CFM, 78 inches of water lift and a 50 ft, 16/3-gauge cord, in a chromed steel tank that stands 36 inches tall and 17 inches across. The empty weight is 63 lb. The 5-piece tool kit comes with it.
Its airflow is the highest here, but its lift is lower than the TaskForce and Tsunami figures, so on a long hose or heavy slurry those two rate better on paper. Mercury's owner's manual gives 1 year on the motor and 1 year of service labor, with 90 days on wear items such as cords and squeegees.
Pros
- 225 CFM, the most airflow listed here
- 50 ft cord and a steel tank
- Dry capacity of 20 gallons
Cons
- Wet capacity is 15 gallons, not 20
- 78 inches of lift is below the Tornado and Minuteman figures
Skip it if you need a long warranty. For wide wet floors, Mercury sells a 25.5 inch squeegee assembly for the Storm (WVS-20B) at $199.95. Pick the Storm when the job is mostly dry debris with the occasional puddle.
Best for smaller crews: Tornado TaskForce 15

Best smaller canister
Tornado Taskforce 15 Wet/Dry Industrial Canister Vacuum (94232)
$499
The same motor, lift and 114 CFM as the TaskForce 20 in a 15 gallon polyethylene tank.
The TaskForce 15 lists the same 1.61 HP motor and 90 inches of water lift as the 20, with 114 CFM and a 15 gallon polyethylene tank. A sound-insulated vacuum head, a 360 degree rotating hose and four transport wheels round it out. A front-mount squeegee is sold separately.
Pick it over the TaskForce 20 when a smaller tank is easier to move or empty. Pick the 20 when you want fewer trips to the drain and the Trot-Mop front squeegee in the box. Both include a 14 inch rug tool, crevice tool, dust tool and squeegee tool.
Pros
- 90 inches of lift and 114 CFM
- Lower price than the TaskForce 20
- Four transport wheels
Cons
- Smaller 15 gallon tank
- Front-mount squeegee sold separately
Skip it if you pick up water every day. Take the larger tank, or go to the Tsunami for floors. Both Tornado canisters sit with the Tornado vacuums.
Best budget pick: Dapper Supply 16 Gallon

Best budget
Dapper Supply 16-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum, 4.5 Peak HP, 3-in-1 Function
$220
A 3-in-1 wet, dry and blower vac in a stainless steel tank at an entry-level price.

The Dapper Supply 16 gallon is the lower-priced pick for garages, job sites and light shop duty. Our listing gives 76.3 inches of water lift, 108 CFM and a 4.5 peak HP (3,750 W) motor rating, in a stainless steel tank with a dual filter (wide plus cylinder). One unit switches between wet pickup, dry pickup and blowing. Specs list an 8.2 ft hose, a 13.2 ft cord, 78 to 80 dBA and a UL certification, with a 1 year warranty.
Pros
- The most affordable vac in this list
- Wet, dry and blower functions
- Listed as UL certified
Cons
- 13.2 ft cord means an extension cord on most jobs
- 76.3 inches of lift is the lowest here
Skip it if a crew will run it every day or if you need a squeegee. For a homeowner or a contractor who needs a spare for the truck, it is enough. Its peak horsepower is a motor figure only, as covered above.
Best for large industrial floors: Dapper Supply 26.5 Gallon

Best large tank
Dapper Supply 26.5-Gallon Industrial Wet/Dry Vacuum, 2400W Motor, 222 CFM
$3,700
A 26.5 gallon tank, up to 222 CFM and a 27 inch floor squeegee.
This is the biggest tank in the list at 26.5 gallons. The listing gives a 2,400 W (3.26 HP) motor, up to 222 CFM, 19 kPa or 76 inches of water lift, a 25 ft cord, an 8.2 ft hose and a 27 inch floor squeegee. It has a 20 A plug, which fits a 20 A receptacle, not a standard 15 A outlet, so check the site's outlets before you buy. The warranty is 1 year parts and labor.
Pros
- 26.5 gallon tank for fewer trips to the drain
- 27 inch floor squeegee
- Up to 222 CFM
Cons
- The highest price in this list
- The 20 A plug needs a 20 A outlet
- 76 inches of lift, below the Tornado and Minuteman figures; shake-cleaned filter
Skip it if the Tsunami covers your floors, since it lists more lift and a longer warranty for less. If you want this motor and squeegee in a smaller tank, the Dapper Supply 21 gallon industrial at $1,995 lists the same 2,400 W, 222 CFM, 76 inches of lift and 27 inch squeegee. Choose the 26.5 gallon when the extra tank saves trips to the drain on large wet floors and the site has 20 A outlets.
How to choose by job
- Floods and leaks on hard floors: the Tsunami, for the front squeegee and the 95 inches of lift.
- Carpet water and room-by-room pickup: the TaskForce 20 or 15 with the 14 inch rug tool for standing water. A wand pulls surface water only, so for soaked carpet and pad see how to dry wet carpet and flooded basement cleanup.
- Stripping slurry: the Tsunami's 24 inch squeegee or the TaskForce 20's Trot-Mop picks up each section right after scrubbing, before the stripper dries. Rinse the tank and squeegee after the job. See how to strip and wax VCT floors for the steps.
- Job-site debris and dust: the Mercury Storm for its airflow and dry capacity, or the Dapper Supply 26.5 gallon for tank size. For fine dust, a dust extractor versus a shop vac comparison explains the filters you need.
- A spare for the truck: the Dapper Supply 16 gallon.
If your work is cars, see the best vacuums for car detailing. If the filter clogs, how to clean a vacuum filter covers cartridge and cloth filters. For offices and hotels, upright and wide-area commercial vacuums are a different tool.
Price bands
| Band | Machines |
|---|---|
| Under $800 | Dapper Supply 16 gallon, Tornado TaskForce 15, Mercury Storm WVC-20, Tornado TaskForce 20 |
| $1,000 to $2,500 | Minuteman Tsunami, T16W and T16WD, and the Dapper Supply 21 gallon |
| Over $3,000 | Dapper Supply 26.5 gallon |
The step from the first band to the second buys the Tsunami's 95 inches of lift, 24 inch squeegee and 5 year parts warranty. If you never wash wide hard floors, stay in the first band. The third band is one large-tank industrial machine, so read its Skip-it line first. For vacuums beyond these six, the wet/dry vacuum collection has more.
Frequently asked questions
Which brand wet and dry vacuum cleaner is best?
It depends on the job. In our range, Minuteman suits hard-floor floods, Tornado suits weekly water pickup and Mercury suits big dry loads with two motors. Dapper Supply is the lower-priced option. The table above lists lift, airflow and warranty for each.
Which wet and dry vacuum cleaner is best for home?
A consumer unit is enough for a basement spill or a garage. The Dapper Supply 16 gallon is the entry-level machine in this list. If you pick up water more than a few times a year, a commercial canister gives you a bigger tank, more lift and, on the Minuteman, a 5 year parts warranty.
Which is better, Shark or Tineco?
Both make floor-washer mops, which clean and pick up in one pass on a hard floor. That is a different tool from a wet/dry canister, so we do not pick between them here.
What is the strongest suction wet dry vac?
Of these six electric vacs, the Minuteman Tsunami lists the most water lift at 95 inches and the Mercury Storm WVC-20 the most airflow at 225 CFM. Tornado's compressed-air jumbo vacs list far more lift, 242 inches on the JA Single Air, but they run off a large air compressor, not a wall outlet. Suction and airflow are separate numbers, so pick the one your job needs.
How much suction does a shop vac need for water?
The six commercial vacs here list 76 to 95 inches of water lift. For long hoses, heavy slurry or water in carpet, pick from the top of that range, and use CFM to judge how fast a big floor clears.
Is peak horsepower a good way to compare shop vacs?
No. Peak horsepower rates the motor, not the pull at the hose. Use water lift and CFM, and read the tank size and cord length too.
What is the difference between wet and dry tank capacity?
A tank holds less liquid than dry debris because a float closes off the airflow before water reaches the motor. The Mercury Storm WVC-20 lists 20 gallons dry and 15 gallons wet. When the pitch changes and suction drops, the tank is full: switch off and empty it.
