Concrete Polishing and Grinding: A Beginner's Overview
Polished concrete has become a favorite floor for warehouses, retail and modern offices because it is durable, low maintenance and looks impressive. Unlike a coating, the polish is created mechanically by grinding and refining the concrete itself. Here is a plain language overview of how it works.
What Polishing Actually Is
Concrete polishing is a multi step process of grinding the surface with progressively finer diamond abrasives, similar to sanding wood from coarse to fine. Each pass removes the scratches from the previous one until the surface reflects light. A hardener or densifier is applied during the process to make the surface denser and more durable.
The General Steps
- Grind the surface with coarse metal bond diamonds to remove coatings and open the concrete
- Apply a densifier to harden the surface
- Refine with progressively finer resin bond diamonds
- Polish to the desired gloss level, from satin to high gloss
- Apply a guard or sealer to help resist stains
Equipment Involved
Large jobs use dedicated planetary grinders, but smaller areas and maintenance work can be handled with a heavy floor machine fitted with diamond tooling. Dust control is essential during grinding, so a dust extractor or industrial vacuum with the correct filtration runs alongside the grinder to capture silica dust.
Gloss Levels
- Flat or matte: ground but not highly polished, an industrial look
- Satin: low sheen with some reflection
- Polished: clear reflection of light
- High gloss: a mirror like wet look finish
Maintaining the Result
Once polished, the floor is maintained by dust mopping and damp scrubbing with a neutral cleaner, plus periodic burnishing with a high speed burnisher to renew the shine. No stripping or waxing is needed, which is a big part of the appeal.
