How to Clean Concrete Floors in a Commercial Building

Concrete is one of the most common floors in warehouses, garages, retail backrooms and workshops. It looks low maintenance, but bare and sealed concrete both trap fine dust and soak up spills if you let them sit. A simple routine keeps the surface clean, safe and presentable.

Start With Dry Soil Removal

Most of the dirt on a concrete floor is dry grit tracked in on shoes and wheels. Remove it before it gets ground into the surface or turns to mud when wet. Dust mop or sweep daily, and for larger areas use a wide area vacuum to cover more square footage in less time. Grit is abrasive, so daily removal also protects any sealer on the slab.

Wet Cleaning and Scrubbing

For routine wet cleaning, a neutral pH cleaner and a mop work for small spaces. For anything over a few hundred square feet, an automatic floor scrubber saves hours. It lays down solution, scrubs and recovers the dirty water in one pass, so the floor dries fast and stays cleaner than mopping, which just moves soil around.

Pad and Brush Selection

Dealing With Stains and Grease

Oil and grease are the usual problem on concrete. Cover fresh spills with an absorbent and sweep it up before scrubbing. For set-in oil, apply a degreaser, give it dwell time of 5 to 10 minutes, then agitate with a floor machine and a scrub brush. Rinse and recover the slurry so it does not dry back onto the surface.

Sealing Saves Work

A sealed slab cleans up far faster than bare concrete because liquids sit on top instead of soaking in. If your floor is constantly staining, sealing it is the single change that reduces daily labor the most. Reapply sealer on the schedule the manufacturer lists for your traffic level.

1. Daily: dust mop or vacuum to remove grit
2. Daily or weekly: damp scrub high traffic lanes with a neutral cleaner
3. Monthly: full deep scrub of the whole floor with the correct pad
4. As needed: spot treat oil and grease with a degreaser
5. Annually: inspect and reseal worn areas
