Air Scrubber vs Negative Air Machine: What's the Difference?
Air scrubbers and negative air machines look almost identical and even use the same filters, which causes plenty of confusion. The difference is not the machine, it is how you set it up and what job it does. Understanding both helps you control air quality on remediation jobs.
The Machine Is the Same, the Job Is Different
Both are HEPA filtration units that pull air through filters and push it out. The distinction is in how the exhaust is handled:
- As an air scrubber: the unit recirculates filtered air within the room to clean the air repeatedly
- As a negative air machine: the unit exhausts outside the containment, creating negative pressure inside
Air Scrubbing: Cleaning the Air
Used as an air scrubber, the machine cleans the air in a space by capturing dust, mold spores and fine particles, then returning the filtered air to the room. This lowers airborne contamination during and after work like mold remediation, demolition and fire cleanup.
Negative Air: Containing Contamination
Used as a negative air machine, the unit exhausts filtered air outside the contained area through ducting. This makes the pressure inside the containment lower than outside, so air flows in rather than out. That negative pressure keeps contaminants from escaping into clean parts of the building, which is essential in mold and asbestos work.
When to Use Each Setup
- Cleaning the air in an open or semi open space: air scrubber mode
- Containing hazardous contaminants during remediation: negative air mode with containment barriers
