How to Remove Odor From Carpet for Good

Carpet odor is frustrating because air fresheners only mask it for a few hours. The smell comes back because the source is still in the carpet. To remove odor for good, you have to find what is causing it and physically remove the residue, not cover it up.

Find the Source First

Odor in carpet usually comes from one of a few sources: spills that soaked into the backing, pet accidents, moisture and mold, or general soil buildup. Identify which one you are dealing with, because the fix differs. A spill needs flushing, moisture needs drying, and biological odor needs an enzyme treatment.

Extract, Do Not Just Spray

The key principle is that odor lives in residue, and residue has to be removed. A carpet extractor flushes the affected area with hot water and pulls the contaminated solution back out. Spraying deodorizer on top without extracting just adds another smell on top of the old one.

The General Process

1. Vacuum the area well to remove dry soil

4. Extract thoroughly with hot water, flushing the area more than once for strong odors

When Odor Reaches the Backing

If a spill or accident soaked through to the backing and pad, surface cleaning will not fully solve it. The contamination has to be flushed out of the deeper layers, and in severe cases the pad may need replacing. Heat helps the treatment work, so a heated extractor is a real advantage for deep odor.
